A message from our Athletic Director

For those who may not know me, my name is Sue Duprat and I am the interim AD here at Harwood until the end of the school year.

(Well, actually, I am still Sue Duprat even if you already know me...)

We've seen the headlines.

Yes, we are all appalled.

And we swear it will never happen at our events.

But we need to understand and accept our role in all of this.

I fear that far more schools will prohibit fans at events.

I fear that our kids, our families, and our communities will continue to feel the impact of the anger and ill will that seems to be a balm to some individuals.

So, please, check yourself. Check that we aren't adding fuel to the fire by our actions.

But also, and MORE IMPORTANTLY, feel empowered, and, in turn, empower the folks you deal with to just say:

"Nope, that's not how we do it here"; "Let's just cheer for our kids, and not worry about the refs".

Or whatever.

A fellow parent/fan who calls on a misbehaving individual early in the engagement, has far more impact than any school admin walking through a crowd could have.

No one goes from 0-10 in the anger/aggression world.

Folks go from 0-1, 1-3, etc.

The goal is to curb the behavior at 2-3, while it is still manageable.

If you were during my first tour of duty at HU, you likely heard me say at every sports meeting that when you go to an event, you can have only one of 4 roles:

  • Coach

  • Player

  • Fan

  • Official

It's when folks try to take on more than one role, fan + Coach, Fan + Ref; etc, that trouble can brew.

So, families - please remind the humans around you that we firmly believe that this is "about the kids", so let's make that happen.

We want our student-athletes to have the visible, vocal support of their friends and family, as long as we keep it all student focused, and positive.
