Our Mission is to provide healthy, nutritious food in an educational environment.

To the Harwood Community:

The Harwood Union Food Service Department is excited about the upcoming school year!  Before we look ahead though, I wanted to take a moment and list just some of last year’s notable food-related accomplishments here at Harwood Union:

* We won the Golden Garlic Award from Two Rivers Center in Montpelier for our commitment to using local, sustainable products.
* We won the national Whole Grains Council Award for including a significant percentage of whole grains in our daily menus.
* Our Jr. Iron Chef Vermont Team won Greatest Number and Best Use of Local Ingredients.
* We joined the Vermont Fresh Network.
* We received a 500 grant from Central Vermont Food Systems Council (CVFSC) – Garden in Every School Project for expanding our outdoor vegetable garden.

The Harwood Union Food Service Department is planning to continue many of our initiatives into the upcoming school year – monthly localvore lunches, guest chef visits, culinary demonstrations and culinary-related presentations.  We will continue to use local and organic products, purchasing food from over 30 local farmers, food producers and food partners including Gaylord Farm, Santa Davida Farm, Misty Knoll Farm, Red Hen Bakery, KC Bagel, the Two Rivers Center Farm-to-Table Program and the Intervale Community Farm just to name a few!  We will also continue to enjoy support from Mad River Localvores, Vermont Fresh Network, American Flatbread, Vermont Department of Agriculture, Vermont FEED, and the Harwood Union School Board.

Our mission is to provide Harwood Union students with the knowledge, skills and environment to make food choices that support healthy bodies, healthy minds and a healthy planet. We encourage students’ and community members’ involvement to help create and foster this environment.

The culinary staff and I look forward to continuing to provide healthy, nutritious food in an educational environment.

Sincerely,

Paul Morris
