Vermont Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) Spring Conference

Posted 04/10/2012

On Thursday and Friday, March 29 and 30, Harwood FBLA attended the Vermont FBLA Spring Conference at the Sheraton in South Burlington. FBLA chapters from schools all around Vermont participated in the two-day event in which they competed in events and made new friends. Also while attending the conference, students listened to motivational speaker, Quentin Whitehead, a bestselling author whose main theme is “Its Possible”. Mr. Whitehead is someone that I am now looking into getting to come and speak at Harwood during one of our morning assemblies. Prior to attending the conference, students chose tests that they took either individually or with a team member. Some of these tests correlated with the events at the conference that students participated in. The tests included subjects like Accounting, Management Decision Making, Marketing, and Sports Management.

Three Harwood students attended the conference; Gianna Dejong- Kaiser, Josh Seckler, and Joe Magee. For each competition the top five students received certificates while the top three students received certificates, plaques and a cash prize. Joe placed 3rd in the state for Accounting 1, receiving a cash prize of fifty dollars. Josh and Joe placed 3rd for Management Decision Making and received twenty-five dollars each. Gianna placed 2nd in FBLA Principles and Procedures, 5th in Help Desk, and 5th in Business Communications. The conference took place during the same time that President Obama was holding a fundraiser in the hotel. The students were able to experience the level of security that is used when the President holds such an event. Upon leaving the conference students lined the road as the President’s motorcade made its way back to the airport.

The conference was something that I took very seriously and look forward to attending next year, and I would strongly advise other students to get involved with FBLA. FBLA is something that will give us opportunities that we would not receive otherwise.

Students in FBLA are going to be developing contracts for next year’s officers to sign as well as are planning a fundraising and community-service project because we hope to attend the National Fall Leadership Conference next year in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Respectfully Submitted,

Joe Magee

Visit from Senator Sanders

Posted 04/10/2012

Senator Bernie Sanders came to speak to a group of Harwood students this week. Senator Sanders discussed how personal philosophy on the proper role of government leads to much of our contemporary political debate. Differences between progressive and conservative philosophies were also discussed with emphasis on the issues of health care, education, government spending, foreign policy, and the overall state of the economy.

The Students vs. Teachers Basketball Faceoff on March 30th

59 to 58!!
The seniors won with a perfect three point shot from Max Beilke, beating the staff by only one point. Max brought them to within two, then stole the ball, passed it to Conor Lyons who passed it back to Max who swished the game winning shot, with less than 4 seconds left. Alright, Seniors!!

Down Syndrome Awareness Day

Posted 03/19/2012

Wednesday March 21 is World Down Syndrome Day. This year is the seventh anniversary of the institution of this day and this is the first year that the day will be officially observed by the United Nations.

Down Syndrome was determined as a chromosomal disorder in 1959 by Jerome Lejeune, a French pediatrician and geneticist. One in every 733 babies born will have this genetic disorder in the United States alone. There are more than 400,000 people living with Downs Syndrome.

The day was first set aside to honor Lejeune for his discovery, but has grown to envelope instilling awareness regarding this genetic disorder. The date was chosen by Down Syndrome International to denote the uniqueness of the disorder due to the triplication of the 21st chromosome. 3:21 has become synonymous with Downs Syndrome.

Harwood’s National Honors Society members will be selling wristbands that express awareness for Downs Syndrome during all three lunches on Wednesday 3-21. The bands will sell for $2.00 apiece and all profits will go to the Vermont Special Olympics.

Parents who were asked if they could go back and tell themselves one thing before they had their child or adopted a child with Down Syndrome prepared the following uplifting You Tube Video. ”

Watch the video, buy a bracelet and work together to improve the quality of life and champion the rights of people with Down Syndrome and their communities around the World!!

Our community is strong and will remember all who are a part of what makes us that way. Lets celebrate the diversity that makes us special and proudly wear a wristband that speaks to supporting differences.
