The Hub Program is a learning pathway designed for high school students who want to succeed in school, but who are looking for a more personal approach to learning.

The program is ideally suited for 9th and 10th grade students who seek a unique, interest-based learning experience that combines academics with a community- based internship.  It is through the combination of these school andcommunity-based authentic learning experiences that students can have a voice in shaping their education and a choice in meeting Harwood Union Graduate Expectations.

Through The Hub Program, students have the opportunity to access a Vermont state standards-based curriculum, develop important skills that will make them viable employees, and develop an understanding of themselves, as both lifelong learner and valued community member.  These learning experiences will prepare individuals to pursue their true interests and passions, expand  intellect and develop responsible citizenship. The program offers students the opportunity to earn 6 credits during each academic year including: Math (1), Science (1), English (1), Social Studies (1), P.E. (.5),   an elective – Teen Explorations (1), and Career and Life Planning (.5) in conjunction with the Next Step Program.   Students will also participate in service-learning and outdoor education travel opportunities twice a year. The H.U.B. offers a dynamic weekly schedule, including 3 days of academic classes and project-based learning, and 2 days of work in an interest-based internship  at  a community partner site.

What does a schedule look like at The H.U.B.?

Each student at the The Hub Program will have a weekly schedule that includes 3 days of academics during regular school hours at the main Harwood campus, generally, Monday, Wednesday and Fridays.  On Tuesdays and Thursdays, students work in an internship, based on the students’ interests and passions at a community worksite, under the supervision of a mentor.

Learning and Assessment unique to each student.

Each student will work in an advisory at Harwood - a small group of students led by a teacher, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.  At the beginning of every quarter, the teacher and each student work together to develop a Vermont state standards-aligned learning plan unique to the student's skills, goals and interests.

Parent involvement is a critical component in the design of the learning plans.  The learning plan also includes the projects, research methods and papers that the student will be working on throughout the quarter.  The projects are planned around the work and learning at the internship, and are designed to benefit both the student and the worksite.

At the end of each quarter, students present the work they have accomplished to a panel of peers, parents, teachers and community members.  Students must explain and justify the work they have done, highlighting the new learnings and understandings they gained from their learning experiences.  The panel asks questions about the students' work, gives feedback and offers recommendations for the next quarter.  The presentations then also serve as an authentic learning experience.
