Harwood Union High School TA InformationStudents entering Harwood Union High School have had the advantage of Elementary School teachers who know them very well and usually have gotten to know their families fairly well. Students spent most of their days with the same teachers through each school year. Middle School students were members of teams, with a few teachers and a core group of students. However, High School expects students to move from one class to another perhaps never having the same teacher again during their four years. Guidance Counselors have between two and three hundred students each. Harwood’s Advisory Program is a simple method meant to ensure that no secondary school student becomes anonymous. In this advisory system, the goal is to have one adult in the school who sees each student every day in a time similar to a traditional homeroom. The difference between advisory time and homeroom is that the adult serves as an advisor not simply a homeroom teacher. Our intent is that advisory time benefits students in the following manner:
An intact Advisory Program will ensure that no student is lost because they are quiet or do not draw attention to themselves. Teacher Advisors’ major responsibilities can be described as:
Most staff members are used to their traditional roles as content area teachers and as paraprofessionals. On occasion the need will arise for the Teacher Advisor to assume the role of student advocate. Advisors do not play primary role in discipline, however they need to be involved when student behavior is brought into question. As an advisor, the role is to assist the student in learning how to handle a negative situation at a time when the student may not be thinking clearly. Rather than exonerating the student, the advocate’s role is to speak with and for the student while assisting them to assume appropriate responsibility. Parental contact is a critical element of a quality Teacher Advisory program. Advisors may discuss a wide range of topics with parents, including summaries of school experiences, discipline concerns, course offerings and selections, future planning for college and career choices. Conversations with parents may lead to the need for referring more in-depth discussions to guidance counselors, career planning personnel or other resources.
