1. Acceptable Use: The Harwood Union Middle/ High School’s purpose in accessing the Internet is to support research and education by providing access to unique resources. Any user’s account must be in support of education and research and consistent with the educational objectives of the Harwood Union Middle/ High School. Use of other organization’s networks or computing resources as accessed through the Harwood Union Middle/ High school must comply with the rules set forth in this policy. Transmission of any material in violation of any United States or Vermont statute or regulations is prohibited. This includes, but is not limited to, copyrighted material, threatening or obscene material, or material protected by trade secret. Use for commercial activities is not acceptable. Use for product endorsement or political lobbying is also prohibited.

2. Privileges: The use of the Internet is a privilege, not a right, and inappropriate use will result in a cancellation of those privileges. (Each person who receives an account will first take part in training provided by Harwood Union Middle/ High School pertaining to the proper use of the network.) The System Administrator may close an account at any time as required. The administration, faculty, and staff of Harwood Union Middle/ High School may request the System Administrator to deny, revoke, or suspend specific user accounts.

3. Network Etiquette: Any user is expected to abide by the generally accepted rules of network etiquette. These include (but are not limited to) the following:

a. Be polite. Never send or encourage others to send abusive messages.
b. Use appropriate language. Do not swear, use vulgarities, or any other inappropriate language. Illegal activities are strictly forbidden.
c. Protect your personal information. Do not reveal others’ personal addresses or phone numbers or those of students or colleagues.
d. Note that electronic mail (e-mail) is not guaranteed to be private. People who operate the system do have access to all mail. Messages relating to or in support or illegal activities will be reported to the authorities.
e. Do not use the network in such a way that you would disrupt the use of the network by other users.
f. All communications and information accessible via the network should be assumed to be Harwood Union Middle/ High School property.

4. Security: Security on any computer system is a high priority, especially when the system involves many users. If a user identifies a security problem on the Local Area Network (LAN), the user must notify the System Administrator or a faculty member (who is obliged to report the problem to the System Administrator), and should not demonstrate the problem to other users. Nor should another individual’s account be used without permission from that individual. All of the above will result in cancellation of user privileges. Any user identified as a security risk or having a history of problems with other computer systems may be denied access to the Internet through Harwood Union Middle/ High School.

5. Vandalism: Vandalism will result in cancellation of privileges. Vandalism is defined as any malicious attempt to harm or destroy data of another user, LAN, Internet, or any agencies or other networks that are connected to the Internet backbone.

6. Harwood Union Middle/ High School makes no warranties of any kind, whether expressed or implied, for the service it is providing. School will not be responsible for any damages suffered. This includes loss of data resulting from delays, nondeliveries, mis-deliveries, or service interruptions caused by its own negligence or the user’s errors or omissions. Use of any information obtained via the Internet is at the user’s own risk. Harwood Union Middle/ High School specifically denies any responsibilities for the accuracy or quality of information obtained through its Internet services.
