History of Harwood Union High School

Thirty-nine years ago a new Junior and Senior high school opened for service. The school opened to all the children of the surrounding towns in the valley: Waitsfield, Moretown, Fayston, Warren, Duxbury, and Waterbury.

The process was a big step to take, however the towns were willing to put up the effort. The whole process started in early 1964.

On February 11, 1964 there was a meeting held for many proposals to be voted on. The voters from the surrounding towns voted on a 1.6 million dollar bond issue. The issue was on the proposal of a combined Junior and Senior high school containing grades seven through twelve. The meeting was a success, with all the towns voting yes, some decisions had to be made.

At a second meeting the towns had to decide on a location for the school. They voted on a twenty one acre plot in Duxbury, the school would eventually be built here.

The people of the valley decided on the site work going to a South Burlington firm. Roland Whittier was assigned the architechture work and Pizzagalli would build the school at 1.9 million dollars.

The original structure of the building was as follows:

Junior and Senior wings
Split level wings
Gym (upstairs and downstairs)
Cafeteria (kitchen and eating area)
Band and chorus rooms
Auditorium
Library (office and storage area)
Class rooms (with science labs)
Industrial arts (wood, metal)
Art room
Home Economics (cooking area)
Main offices (nurse's office)
Business rooms
Other small rooms
Storage area
Parking area
Ball fields (soccer and baseball)

The construction process all went smoothly except for a few minor problems. A wall blew down during construction, but it was soon rebuilt and constuction continued. The second problem was lack of water in the area. B&B Artisian Well Company failed to find any, however Green Mountain Well Company found a reliable source after a few tries. The river had been an option, but only as a last resort.

The school was named after Dr. Charles Harwood for his devoted and faithful services to the people in the valley.

As the weeks went by, progress was made and annual reports and bulletins were sent out informing the general public of the current status of the school.

So in the fall of 1966, Harwood Union High School opened for service...
