Judith Corey
Department Head
Judith Corey began teaching at Harwood in 1977 after having taught seventh and eighth grade science for six years in Connecticut. She has a B.A. in chemistry with a minor in music from Wheaton College in Norton, Massachusetts and a M.S. in Science Education from Southern Connecticut State University. She worked as an assistant in research for a biochemist at Yale University immediately after graduation from Wheaton.
Ms. Corey received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science Teaching in 2000. This award brought $7500 to Harwood, which Ms. Corey has used to make purchases that will improve technology in the science department. Ms. Corey also was named an Outstanding High School Science Teacher in 2003 by the Vermont Academy of Science & Engineering.
Ms. Corey recently retired from twenty-five years of service on the Board of Directors for Vermont Science Teachers Association. She is a music lover and regularly attends Vermont Symphony Orchestra performances. In the past, she as served as a church organist and has accompanied Harwood students and teachers in performances. She lives in Waitsfield and thinks chemistry is fun.

Mike Coyle
Michael Coyle is the newest addition to the science department at Harwood, beginning in 2005. Mr. Coyle, who began his teaching career in the Spanish Harlem area of New York City, is originally from the Finger Lakes region of central New York. He studied at, and earned his degree from, Ithaca College in Ithaca, New York. After school, he moved on to the big city and has since returned to the serenity of country life here in Warren, Vermont.
Mr. Coyle is an avid outdoorsman who has been working with children in summer camp settings since he was a teenager. His travels have taken him across the country, although his proudest moments have been working at Paul Newman’s Hole in the Wall Gang camps with chronically and terminally ill children. He is immensely proud and incredibly excited to be the newest member of the science department at Harwood. |

Ginny DeFede Cove
Ginny DeFede Cove has taught Earth Space Science at Harwood since 1994. She lives in Waterbury Center with her husband, Bill Cove, their five children, sheep, chickens, and turkeys. She has lived in many places including Indian reservations in Montana and Minnesota.
Some of the wildest memories there include driving 120 miles for a grocery store, winds clocked higher than 140 mph, and the Rocky Mountains standing guard over the flat plains.
Ginny practiced law for fourteen years before courts in Vermont, Maine, Montana, the Blackfeet Tribal Court, and the Crow Tribal Court.
Her loves include meteorology, astronomy, history, quilting, and writing. She grew up in the California desert and planned to live in Vermont since she was six years old. She loves teaching and the joys of seeing the spark in a student’s eye. |

Kate Hunt
Kate Hunt attended Bates College and received a B.A. in biology, with minors in chemistry, anthropology and education. Upon graduation, she joined the Peace Corps and spent two years in the West African nation of Sierra Leone, teaching biology, general science, reading and math to students in grades 8, 9, and 10. More recently, she completed courses leading to middle level certification and a M.Ed. from the University of Vermont.
She has been teaching science at Harwood since 1995. She believes that a good education is a cornerstone of future success, and to that end, dedicates herself to providing a classroom experience that is challenging, interesting and promotes the development of critical skills.
Kate and her husband, Steven, have lived in Moretown for 13 years. Their son Matt is currently a sophomore at Elon University, and daughter Sierra is a freshman at McGill University.
Kate and her family have camped in much of the U.S. and Canada and have traveled parts of Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia. At home, Kate is an eclectic reader and crossword puzzle fan. |

John Kerrigan
John Kerrigan, originally from Long Island, earned a B.S. with Honors in Biology Education from Plymouth State College in New Hampshire in 1974. He earned a M. Ed. from UVM in 1982.
Mr. Kerrigan taught in Monroe Township in southern New Jersey from 1974-76, at Colchester Middle School from 1976-77, and joined the Harwood science faculty in 1977. He has taught biology, microbiology, human physiology, and earth science at Harwood. He also is well known for coaching cross country, Nordic skiing, and track and field. Mr. Kerrigan was honored as Harwood Teacher of the Year in 1984 and 1990 and was named National Cross Country Coach of the Year in 2000. |

Jeff Robins
Jeff Robins began teaching at Harwood in 2001. He also taught environmental engineering courses for five years at the undergraduate and graduate level as professor and graduate student.
He earned a B.A. in Human Biology from Stanford University, a M.S. in Environmental Engineering from Stanford University, and a Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering from the University of Massachusetts at
Amherst. He is also a licensed Professional Engineer. He worked for approximately 20 years as state regulator, consulting engineer, college professor, graduate research and teaching associate, and environmental activist. |

Charlotte Sherman
Sherman has been a science educator at Harwood for eight years. She earned her degree in chemistry with a minor in mathematics at UVM and received her M. Ed. from UVM in 1994. Prior to her involvement in education, she worked as a chemist for 20 years for the State of Vermont Water/Wastewater Department and for two area private laboratory consultants. Before employment at Harwood, Mrs. Sherman worked as an educator and instructional assistant at area schools. |

Nancy Spencer
Nancy Spencer earned her B.A. degree from Villanova University and her teaching certification from the University of Vermont. She also holds a Vermont state teaching license in the specific area of Middle Level Education and a Master's of Science in Education from the University of New England. She joined the Harwood faculty in 1987.
Nancy's goal in teaching science is to provide students with opportunities to develop abilities in the area of scientific inquiry, and to stimulate curiosity and appreciation of the natural world. |

Kristi Lamb
Kristi Lamb is a part time general biology teacher. She earned her BA in Biology Education from Rivier College in Nashua, NH. A native of Vermont, Kristi moved back to her home town of Hyde Park for various reasons, including the beautiful landscape, the serenity, and for the fact that all of her family is still in Vermont. Kristi loves being outside, but most of all she loves to spend time with her friends and family especially her two beautiful nieces. Kristi is very excited to be working here at Harwood and to be a member of the science department. |
