Other Information

Definitions

Virus: A Virus is a piece of software with the sole purpose of spreading and "infecting" new computer systems, a virus does not necessarily cause destruction, but destructive viruses do exist, in more recent years they have become far more advanced and changing their form or "mutating" to avoid detection.

Adware: Adware is software that adds advertisements to programs that you use, for example you may get popups when you are not browsing the internet, or a icon that gives you "important product information" Adware most commonly comes with "free" software, typically software producers add bundled adware so they can afford to release free versions of their software.

Spyware: Spyware is very similar to Adware and may also produce advertistments however Spyware also collects information about you, this may include websites that you have visited, what you have searched for on the internet and system information about your computer such as Processor Speed and Operating System, often times the information is sent back to the distributor of the software.

Adware and Spyware

Because of the Similarities between Spyware and Adware they may be cleaned with the name software. Due to the media Hype about spyware and adware many new programs have appeared that claim to remove them, many of these programs themselves contain Adware. To clean up most spyware we recommend using the following free software.

viruses

The best way to "remove a virus" is to protect yourself from it in the first place by running up to date AntiVirus Software, most AntiVirus software requires a yearly subscription, but there are some Free AntiVirus scanners that you may use. When using AntiVirus software it is recommended that you run the updater daily to assure your computers safety.

AVG Anti-Virus FreeVersion 7.1

TrendMicro Housecall (MUST be run in Microsoft Internet Explorer)

Mozilla Firefox 1.07 Web Browser

The Mozilla Firefox Browser may help prevent Adware, Spyware and viruses from sneaking onto your computer.

Where do Viruses, adware and spyware come from

The majority of these troublemaking programs come from 2 places, first of all unsolicited emails with attachments often contain viruses, sometimes a viruses will tell you an email is from someone you know to try to get you to open an attachment, when in doubt double check with the sender to verify that they did send the attachment. The second place is from executable file downloads, if you download software from the internet be cautious that the website that is offering it is reputable.

How to tell if you have Adware, Spyware or viruses

Symptoms of these problems may included advertisements Popping up while not browsing the internet, new Toolbars appearing in Microsoft Internet Explorer and Slower operation (Slower operation may be indicative of other computer problems and is not necessarily due to Adware, Spyware or a Virus)
