Statement of Professional Commitmentback to Guidance page.School Guidance and Counseling services are available to all students at Harwood Union Middle and High School. Each student is assigned to a professional counselor to assist him/her with normal academic, career and personal/social development. All counselors hold a Master’s degree in school counseling or related field, and are licensed by the State of Vermont as professional school counselors. Counselors provide a variety of services to students and families through individual appointments, group presentations, and evening programs. Services include: Coordination and referral to bring together people and resources in the school and community to help ensure the fullest academic and personal development of students. Counseling for individuals or groups to assist healthy personal and social development. Academic advising and scheduling to assist students to plan appropriate high school courses and extra-curricular activities. College and career counseling and coordination, in conjunction with the Next Step Program, to help students develop and implement post-secondary plans. Maintenance and dissemination of academic information, in accordance with the Family Educational Rights to Privacy Act and the policies of the Washington West Supervisory Union, to meet the needs of students, the school and community. Maintenance and dissemination of general resources relevant to post-secondary planning and access, adolescent development, educational options and other pertinent topics. HUHS Counselors are unable to provide the following services: Intensive, long-term counseling Any services, duration and intensity of which may significantly inhibit availability of counselors to the general student body HUHS counselors subscribe the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) Code of Ethics. They strive to protect the confidentiality of information shared in the context of counseling relationships unless: The student waives confidentiality The information is provided by or in the presence of a third party Disclosure is required to prevent clear and imminent danger to the student or others Disclosure is demanded by court order Vermont law requires all school staff to ensure that suspected cases of child abuse or neglect are reported to the Vermont Department of Children and Families. HUHS counselors work as a team within the Student Services Department, and at times, consult with other members of the department in the best interest of students. Student Services personnel may include the Nurse, Student Assistance Counselor, Home School Coordinator, Next Step staff, other student support professionals employed by the school district, and administrators, as deemed helpful. If services to a student warrant an Action Team Meeting, which would involve teachers, efforts will be made to notify the student and the parents.
