Art Introduction (709)- Grades 9-12

In this introductory course, students will learn to develop their own visual language. Students are encouraged to develop their own aesthetic skills through a study of basic art elements and history. Various methods of observing, drawing and experimenting with two and three-dimensional forms are emphasized in a sequential format.

Graphic Design (710)- Grades 9-12

This class is a comprehensive introduction too traditional and software based graphic design. Students' design will explore compositions, color, text, and overall commercial viability of logos and product designs. Projects begin with drawing are developed and refined using professional desktop publishing graphic software, and are printed on a photographic inkjet printer. Projects include a product logo, a magazine layout and a compact disk cover. Software skills developed in this class are directly applicable to today's graphic design market. Students can choose between 1/2 computer credit or 1/2 fine arts credit. Lab fee: $20.00

Crafts (712) - Grades 9-12

Crafts introduces students to commercial quality, functional art work. Students will create jewelry and learn the art of weaving, silk painting, basketry, paper, and felting, as well as leather and stained glass. Each student is encouraged to develop his/her own personal art in each of these media. Lab fee: $30.00

Basketry (714) - Grades 10-12

Prerequisite: B in crafts

The course is for students who enjoy making baskets. Experiences will include using various three-dimensional materials such as ash, reed, and cane, learning the history of baskets, and understanding the many different techniques used in basketry. Lab fee: $40.00

Ceramics I (716) - Grades 10-12

Prerequisite: B in crafts

Ceramics is in depth exploration into clay, hand building techniques such as pinch, slab, and coil, and the use of the potter's wheel. Time will be spent on terminology, glaze processes and current ceramics artists and their work. All students cooperate in clay recycling, firing, and unloading the kiln. Students will also be encouraged to develop their creative side from the start of their projects to the finish project. Lab fee: $25.00

Ceramics II (717) - Grades 10-12

Prerequisite: B in ceramics

Ceramics II is a further exploration into clay. Focused time will be spent on both the wheel and hand building. Students will build upon their prior knowledge of this medium in a variety of hand-built projects and wheel-work. Lab fee: $25.00

Advanced Drawing/Portfolio Art (718)- Grades 10-12
1/2 credit
Prerequisite: B in Creative Expression, Visual Design or Art Intro

"Drawing is simply a matter of learning to look." This course is designed both for those students who always wanted to draw, as well ass those who are interested n perfecting their drawing skills. While utilizing a variety of observation techniques, students learn to use pencil, charcoal, pen, pastel, paint (acrylic, water color, oil) as well as some non-conventional drawing materials. The ability to experiment with ideas and materials is a must. Lab Fee: $30.00

Photography I (720)- Grades 11-12
1/2 credit

This comprehensive introduction to the photographic medium includes both the building of solid technical skills and emphasis on the creative importance of finely crafted black and white images. After mastering the processes of film exposure, development, and printing, students will then implement their skills in project based work. Students are introduced to historically important contributors to the medium, which aid in their development of their own personal style and vision. We will explore the exciting world of digital manipulation using Photoshop combined with our large format photo quality inkjet printer. Emphasis on this class will be effort, and the ability of each student to take risks in order to further advance their learning and exploration. Students may use their own manually capable cameras or the schools cameras. Lab Fee: $50.00

Photography II (721) - Grades 11-12
1/2 credit
Prerequisite: Photography I or permission of instructor

This continuation of photography I will let students further explore the photographic medium while furthering the development of their own personal aesthetic. Through series-based projects, students will be able to explore alternative processes, advanced printing techniques, and today's digital image making possibilities. Students will continue to be introduced to historically relevant artists, as well as receive an overview of today's commercial photography market. Students may use their own manually capable cameras or the school's cameras. Lab fee: $50.00

Art Lex Magazine Design (722) - Grades 9-12
1/4 credit/semester
Prerequisite: Permission of the instructor

Art Lex is a student run art and literacy magazine that showcases the creative works of the Harwood and Mad River Valley Community. Members of the Art Lex class will solicit submissions, create magazine layouts, and use today's powerful graphic design software in creating this annual publication. Students need to be self-motivated yet eager to work cooperatively with others. Class meets for one hour weekly each semester.
