On Wednesday afternoon, February 15,  the Big Picture Theater held the Mad River Business Builders Business Expo. This was my first time attending the event and I wasn’t sure what to expect. When I walked in I was pleasantly surprised by what I saw. The room was full of booths and tables that different businesses had set up. Each business had their own unique design that set them apart from the other businesses. The people from the businesses all had some very interesting points that will help me when I’m looking to start my own business. Students from across Vermont spent the day expanding and sharpening their knowledge of the body’s most powerful organ. In two pathology labs, they looked at brains donated to the medical college for study and research. They identified different brain regions responsible for motion, memory and impulse control. They observed the tree-like pattern on the inside of the cerebellum and the delicate nerve strands on a spinal chord. They completed a written quiz and showed off their neuroscience smarts in a bee-style oral finale.

Liam Kelley, a senior at Champlain Valley Union High School who lives in Williston, won first prize and a chance to compete in the 2012 National Brain Bee in Maryland in March.
