Socrates Cafe Wednesday, May 23

Posted 05/17/2012

Socrates Café to be Held At Harwood Wednesday May  23 from 7- 9 PM in the Harwood  Library

Students in  Katherine Cadwell’s Introduction to Philosophy class will host a Socrates Café for the entire Harwood community on Wednesday, May 23 from 7:00- 9:00 PM in the Harwood Library.

What is a Socrates  Café, you might ask?   A Socrates Café is a gathering where people from different backgrounds get together and exchange thoughtful ideas and experiences while asking questions.   The model for the Socrates Café  started a decade ago when Christopher Phillips, then a freelance writer asked himself what he could do that would in some modest way further the deeds of those noble souls who had come before him and, as William James put it, “suffered and laid down their lives” to better the lot of humankind? The epiphany and also the answer for him was to be a philosopher in the mold of Socrates, and to hold Socratic dialogues with anyone and everyone who’d like to engage in a common quest to gain a better understanding of human nature - who shared with him the aspiration of becoming more empathetic people and more critical and creative philosophical inquirers.   The discussion on Wednesday,  May 23 has been organized and will be led exclusively by students. Students, faculty, community   and school board members have been invited and will work together in small groups to discuss such questions as " Is it ever okay to lie?" "What are the qualities of a hero?"' What is courage?"  and other timeless questions. Refreshments will be provided.
All interested community members are invited! We hope that you will join us for a lively evening of discussion and dialogue. For questions and more information, please contact Katherine Cadwell  at  (802) 522-7410 or at kcadwell@madriver.com

Prom Dresses

Posted 05/02/2012

Hi, Ruth Brothers and I are collaborating on a project to make it possible for Harwood girls who don't have the means; due to Irene or otherwise, to get a prom dress. We've been collecting gently used prom dresses which can be picked up at no cost (unless they need alterations). They are at Something Sew Right..clothing alterations and repairs, in Waitsfield Village, next to The Valley Players.  If hemming or alterations are needed, Patty will do it at a reduced rate, but please come a.s.a.p. so that there will be the best selection and time for her to do any alterations. There are some really nice dresses..some never worn so come and take a look.  For more information call Patty at Something Sew Right at 496-6999 or Ruth at Appearances at 496-9966.
